In accordance with the report of Sarkar committee,
the Indian Institute of Technology was started in Bombay in 1958. Initially the
institute started with five engineering, two sciences and one Humanities and
social science departments. In the beginning Physics department’s teaching
responsibilities were concentrated on core courses of B.Tech and M. Tech
programs of the institute. A two-year M.Sc. Program in Physics was started in
1964 after detailed discussion in institute senate. Ph.D program and M Sc. (5
Yrs.) integrated course in Physics were started in 1967 and 1971, respectively.
The five year integrated course was later replaced by a four year B.Tech in Engg.
Physics program when the time limit for B.Tech. Was reduced from five to four
years. B. Tech. (E.P.) program was perhaps the first of its kind in India and
attracts still the top rankers of Joint Entrance Examination. The department has
a vibrant research program with work going on in frontier areas of Experimental
and theoretical Condensed Matter Physics, Optics and Laser spectroscopy, Nuclear
Physics and High Energy Physics. Currently department has twenty five faculty
members and about forty research scholars.
