Welcome to the Homepage of Gautam Mukhopadhyay

I was born in Berhampore, West-Bengal on 1st Jan. ’46. I met my wife Pragati Chandravanshi from  Jodhpur in TIFR and married in Dec. ’72. We then went to Gothenburg,  Sweden and lived there for nearly 6 years,. Our son Kunal was born there and Pragati did her Ph.D in Low Temperature Physics with Prof.Tord Cleason of Physics Department at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg. We returned in Oct.’78 as I joined IIT-B; later Pragati joined ACRE, where she is now a Senior  Scientist. Our son Kunal is now in Penn State University, working on protein structures for his Ph.D. in the Chemistry Deptt. Our Daughter Kriti is studying M.Sc. Maths in Mumbai University at Kalina campus. We live in the beautiful campus of IIT-Bombay at Powai. Sweden is like our second home and now we have an adorable Swedish daughter in law.

My research interests :

Since 1967, have been actively involved in research and worked on various topics of condensed matter physics :

i) Calculations of electronic energy band structure, density of states, electron-phonon mass enhancement factor and the Fermi surface for a and g - Cerium, using the Augmented Plane Wave method.

ii) Two magnon bound states in one and two dimensions, and three magnon bound states in one dimension.

iii) Resistivity of liquid metals, by introducing a new method for constructing the electron potential.

iv) Dynamic correlations in uniform electron gas to explain the experimental dynamic structure factor.

v) Dynamic response, in particular, the instantaneous response of inhomogeneous electron systems, such as atoms and semi-infinite metallic systems (jellium).

vi) Nature of electromagnetic fields in and at the surface of a metal (semi-infinite jellium), when an external radiation is incident on a metal surface.

Van der Waals interaction between spherical voids, between atom or molecule and planar metal surface.

vii) Dynamic image potential and dynamic Van der Waals interaction respectively for charge and atom or molecule interacting with a planar metal surface.

viii) Exoelectron emission from surfaces.

ix) Shallow-deep instability of impurity level in semiconductors.

x) Dynamic local field factor in uniform electron liquid.

xi) High Tc superconducting materials.

xii) Collective modes in C60 related materials such as onions and tubes.

xiii) Thermodynamic properties of magnetic materials, e.g., Rare-Earth Iron Garnets (RIG); magneto-optic effects in RIGs.
