Title: Protein localization in biological systems. Abstract: Cells are required to respond to spatially localized signals so as to
move in the direction of nutrition, move away from danger etc. This is
accomplished using proteins that localize to certain cellular regions.
Examples include actin involved in cell locomotion and Protein Kinase C
involved in cell signaling. In spite of its overwhelming importance it
is not well understood how localization is achieved. In this talk we
present two specific examples of protein localization. The first part of
the talk will outline an uncertainity relation in calcium signal
detection by analyzing the role played by the Protein Kinase C (PKC) in
calcium signal transduction. The second part of the talk will focus on
actin self-organization with the presentation of a physical model
for phagocytic actin waves in Dictyostelium. Our results highlight
the importance of collective effects and the need for physical analysis
for understanding cell behavior.
