Title: Aperiodically ordered nano-graphene

Abstract: Designing low dimensional materials with aperiodic order offers the intriguing opportunity to tailor quantum-states in the limits between crystalline order and amorphous disorder. In our work, we uncovered the link between the structural and electronic order of a molecular monolayer film on a quasicrystal surface, a crucial aspect that has largely been neglected so far. We demonstrate that the aperiodic order of the molecular layer is the direct consequence of the at least partial chemical interaction at the molecule-quasicrystal interface. The latter also dominates the interfacial band structure of the material. This opens a unique pathway towards tailoring aperiodic order and quantum states in low dimensional molecular structures on quasicrystalline surfaces by active control of the molecule-surface interaction.
